"A drawing of a memory of childhood, growing up in a small former industrial village on the boarders of a small town within a street of poverty where seconds and thirds didn’t even come into the equation. We did have luxuries though- the fields, trees, an old, abandoned mill and the River Dane as our own private playgrounds.
The River Dane was our temple of dreams where the imagination would run wild; Great Dams of pebbles would be built, a fleet of ships would be launched and set sail to fight noble wars on far off coast lines and wonderous fishing catches would be achieved (Well Bull knobs as we called them of about an inch and half long, all released at the end of another glorious days).
‘Wooden Tide’ is a story about that time, but as also off re-creating a fleet of wooden boats carved and lathed for an exhibition a few years back at the Wild Trust Centre at Rugeley in Staffordshire. These boats were placed next to the River Trent, being partly carved partly of their own natural form. Though as memory did serve me when I came to collect them at the end of their time, not many of my fleet remained to collect. I do not know if they sailed away down the Trent, people took them away as keep sakes or maybe something else happened I will never know." Peter Richard Smith
