“I’m a very lucky fellah because over a period of time I’ve inadvertently gleaned myself a Mastermind group of people viz: Dr. Eugene Optiz (RIP) my great friend and mentor, a bibliophile, polyglot, polymath and doctor of medicine who taught me neuroanatomy and many other things besides and who Imbued in me the love of learning.
Moreover, without his help and encouragement I would never have become an artist. Plus and it is a plus; artists Alison Kershaw, James Bloomfield, Trae England-Shortt, Nicola Smith, and Rae Story as well as Phil Samphire, Bibs, Ruqia and Goody – who when my enthusiasm and motivation for creating art was flagging gave me precious wise words of encouragement.
For as the Sufi Master Hazrat Inayat Khan said, ‘The words that enlighten the soul are more precious than jewels.’ They are all positive proactive perspicacious people. That is to say they all have quick mental insight and understanding of things and are good at multi-tasking and getting things done, of which I have been the beneficiary.
I just hope some of their perspicacity has rubbed off on me because for me life is an enigma or like the King says in the musical The King and I ‘It’s a puzzlement.’ And if I leave myself open to the sobriquet of sycophant for making these observations, I make no apologies, I am only telling it like it is.”
